Virginia man splits $1 million with son-in-law

Bob Ogrodnik & Bill Schouboe

Drawing Date: 1/14/2020

February 3, 2020 - Bob Ogrodnik saw a news report stating that a Mega Millions ticket bought at the 7-Eleven on Kings Grant Road in Virginia Beach had won $1 million. He said his first thought was, “Well, maybe that was me.”

Turns out, it WAS him!

The Virginia Beach man bought three tickets for the January 14 Mega Millions drawing, and one of them matched the first five winning numbers to win the $1 million prize. The only number he missed was the Mega Ball number.

“It was sort of a shock,” he told Virginia Lottery officials. “My mind is swimming!”

On February 3, he returned to the store to receive his big check from the Virginia Lottery. He split the prize with his son-in-law, Bill Schouboe. The store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The winning numbers were 9-11-13-31-47, and the Mega Ball number was 11. He used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on his ticket.

Mr. Ogrodnik, a retiree who served in the Navy for 30 years, said he has no immediate plans for his winnings.

Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 11 p.m. Drawings are broadcast on TV stations across Virginia and streamed live at www.valottery.com. The odds of matching the first five numbers in Mega Millions are 1 in 12,607,306.

The Virginia Lottery is good fun for a great cause. The winning ticket was bought in Virginia Beach, which received more than $28.7 million in Lottery funds for K-12 public education in Fiscal Year 2019.
