Another Jackpot Won in Florida

RELEASE DATE: 8/16/2023

This remarkable Mega Millions® year continues! In just the second drawing after a record-setting jackpot of $1.602 billion was won in Florida, that state gets another jackpot win! One Florida ticket matched all six numbers in the August 15 drawing – the white balls 18, 39, 42, 57 and 63, plus the gold Mega Ball 7 – to win the prize of $39 million ($18.9 million cash). The final jackpot value was adjusted up from the initial estimate based on actual sales.

It has certainly been a roller-coaster year for the 21-year-old Mega Millions game, which has awarded two jackpots exceeding $1 billion (in Maine and Florida), two at $20 million, three in the $30-million range, and one at $483 million. Not only that, but back-to-back jackpots have been won in the same state three times this year – before Florida’s two wins, New York won at $483 million (April 14) and $20 million (April 18), while Massachusetts won at $33 million (January 24) and $31 million (January 31). It’s also the first year since 2016 that as many as eight jackpots have been won in a single year, and we’re only in August! Truly extraordinary results.

Tuesday night’s drawing also produced a big winner in New Jersey, as a ticket sold in that state matched the five white balls to win the second-tier prize of $1 million. And for matching four white balls plus the Mega Ball, 10 tickets across the country won the third-tier prize. One is worth $30,000, because it included the optional Megaplier (available in most states with an extra $1 purchase), which was 3X on Tuesday night. The other nine are worth $10,000 each.

The jackpot for the next drawing on Friday, August 18, resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($9.6 million cash).

Mega Millions is the only lottery game that has awarded five jackpots exceeding $1 billion – two in 2023 and one each in 2018, 2021 and 2022. Tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets are $2 each; in most jurisdictions, players can add the Megaplier for an additional $1 to multiply their non-jackpot prizes. Drawings are conducted at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesdays and Fridays in Atlanta, Georgia.

Half of the proceeds from the sale of each Mega Millions ticket remains in the state where the ticket was sold, where the money supports designated good causes and retailer commissions.
